In several languages it is known as cat's claw because of its claw-shaped thorns (English cat's claw, although that name is also used for other plants; Spanish uña de gato). It is also known as vilcacora. The Polish journalist Roman Warszewski derives that name from the Quechua words "vilca" and "cora". The plant is used in herbalism for a variety of ailments. Cat's Claw was a plant commonly used to treat various ailments by Indians. The Incas from Peru had extensive medical knowledge, which, however, Europeans despised. It wasn't until the 20th century that Vilcacora became the object of interest for doctors and scientists. The raw material from which vilcacora extracts are currently obtained is the bark and root of vilcacora, although the Indians used in medicine all parts of the plant, properly harvested and prepared. The composition of the cat's claw contains many valuable chemical components, including tannins, phenolic acids and saponins. The most valuable, however, are the so-called oxindole alkaloids (tetra- and pentacyclic) responsible for the most important properties of this plant. Vilcacora increases the number of various cells of the immune system that take part in the body's defense reactions, including NK cells - the so-called Natural Killers, which are natural killers that destroy cancer cells. In addition, the composition of the cat's claw contains various antioxidant substances that have a protective effect on our healthy cells against oxidation.
